Palmer’s Gate was born out of musical friendships formed at jam sessions in the performer’s lounge at the Northwest Folklife Festival. The quartet blends a contemporary and traditional approach to Irish and Scottish tunes, including a bit of Quebecois.
While Julie Bennett and Jesse Partridge are from Olympia, WA, Barbara Calm and Jason Foy are From Kalispell, Montana. Julie and Jesse have collaborated in many bands over the years, just as Barbara and Jason have . “We found that we truly enjoyed playing with each other and formed the band despite the distance between members,” said Julie. The result is a very powerful and dynamic sound.
In an email Julie had this to say about how the band came together: “What makes this band special is that Barb and Jason are from Montana and have developed their own unique style of playing. Just so happens that Jesse and I fit right in with them musically. Jesse and I met Barbara and Jason at NW Folklife festival many years ago and hit it off immediately, quickly forming Palmer’s Gate just to play at Folklife every year.”
“This year during our set at Folklife it was pouring rain and we lost power! That didn’t stop us from playing. In fact we gained an audience of about 80 folks who stood in the rain to listen! We figured we’re doing something good. So we decided to start scheduling short tours several times a year.”
